3 Steps to a Healthy Lawn
No matter which way you look at it, our lawns require work. And how much effort you put into your lawn or garden will affect the way it looks. Here are some tips for basic lawn care needs.
Whether you've inherited a sad lawn or starting to care for one yourself, there are a few basic steps to follow to jumpstart your lawn care needs. So where to start?
Florida Lawn Care 101
Mow the grass high
If you've never heard of this before, then it's important to know that cutting the grass extremely short creates a great amount of stress and havoc. A great rule of thumb is to only cut about 1/3 of the height off the blade to ensure nutrients and water are best absorbed. Keep in mind that this routine is generally for warmer months when lawns are in prime growing season.
2. Feed your lawn
It may sound simple enough, but it also depends on what you are using. Your lawn loves micronutrients such as phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen, so it's important to ensure the right amount for your lawn is achieved. It can be very easy to overfeed your lawn thinking this will give more of the good things your grass needs, but that's actually the opposite because our lawns can only breakdown and digest so much "food" at one time. A soil sample test can be a great way to get started with understanding exactly what your lawn needs and when it needs it most.
3. Water appropriately
This can be a tricky step to achieve as we all tend to want to over water our lawns with the idea that our lawns are welcoming of such hydration. Actually, this is the exact opposite of what our lawns want and most of all need. The best rule of thumb for watering is to run your sprinklers in the early morning so evaporation and fungal problems are avoided throughout the day. It's also a good idea to aim for about an inch of water per week spread over three good days of watering.
